5 minutes with…. UprisingMylz. Singer and songwriter UprisingMylz writes and makes music. In the interview with 0816 the young artist with origins in Gambia talks about his life in Italy, his inspirations and what he loves about making music.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

My name is UprisingMylz and I am 26 years old.

What is your favourite colour?

My favourite colour is blue. 

When did you start making music?

I started making music five months ago. I had the idea of making music since I was little. When I used to listen to music I used to believe that it is to preach and teach words of righteousness. And I believe that through music it is easier to get connected with people. 

Your first song is called “Searching for myself”. What was the intention to write it?

I grew up with my mom and my siblings without my dad in Gambia. It took me ages to find what really matters and still I am searching for it.

How is the situation for you right now in South Tyrol?

In the beginning it was really tough. I found myself in a city where people do not really welcome you. People are always avoiding you. You are living but not really because you are scared out of your life. In the media the refugees are always a topic. It is really scary. But you have to learn to live with it. Because sometimes you are blaming politics for your life. I would hate if I want to hate. But I would not let somebody make me hate someone based on their own issues. South Tirol has a beautiful landscape. But it is full of narrow minded people. They are not open minded.

What inspires you?

I get inspired by a lot of things. Inspiration comes from everywhere.

How do you imagine a better world? What would you change?

How people look at each other. We are all humans. Instead of avoiding each other. You always have to get closer to get to know a person.

Did you experience racism?

I did encounter quite some racism. I am here like a stranger, who had no idea how everything works like – the system, the society. The only ways to learn this is by going out to people and talking to them. Once I met a person, who I wanted to ask for an address and he ran away like I was going to do something to him. 

What song do you like to listen to at the moment?

My favourite song at the moment is by Chronixx “Safe and Sound”.

How do you make music? In which languages do you sing?

I have a small studio in my flat, where I make music and I am mixing different languages like Mandinka. That is my mother tongue. I also sing and write in English, German and Wolof language.
