Kuso is a term used in East Asia for the internet culture that generally includes all types of camp and parody. In Japanese, kuso (糞,くそ) is a cuss word that can be translated to fuck, shit, damn, and bullshit, and is often said as an interjection. It is also used to describe outrageous matters and objects of poor quality. This definition of kuso was brought into Taiwan around 2000 by young people who frequently visited Japanese websites and quickly became an internet phenomenon, spreading to Taiwan and Hong Kong and subsequently to Mainland China.

Das Wort Kuso, geschrieben in Katakana, findet sich in Japan nicht nur auf Schildern in Vorgärten, mit denen Hundebesitzer gebeten werden, die Hinterlassenschaften ihres Hundes zu beseitigen. Wie im Deutschen auch kann kuso zum Fluchen in jeder misslichen Lebenslage eingesetzt werden.
Außerdem kann man kuso anderen Wörtern voranstellen. Das Online-Japanischwörterbuch Wadoku bezeichnet das als „vulgären Affix zur Verstärkung“. So drückt kuso-majime da (くそまじめだ) aus, dass etwas verdammt ernst ist. Wer kuso-benkyō (くそ勉強) macht, lernt wie ein Wahnsinniger oder beschwert sich über die „Scheiß Lernerei“.
Das Sprichwort „Wo Licht ist, ist auch Schatten“ wird japanspezifisch bebildert: miso mo kuso mo issho (味噌も糞も一緒) bedeutet, die in der Küche verwendete Miso-Paste mit Scheiße zu vermischen.
